POTSDAM It has been nearly a year since a sudden wind storm ripped the roof from Sergis Italian Restaurant at 10 Market St. Now, after months of repairs, the downtown mainstay has returned home home.
The restaurant reopened Wednesday. State Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, R-Rome, came to Potsdam to mark the occasion, as the first pizzas started baking back at the original location.
Its super. Its great to come home, said owner Sam Spagnolo.
Since the July 19 windstorm, Sergis has operated out of a smaller temporary location at 38 Market St. The smaller kitchen led to a more limited menu, and Mr. Spagnolo said he is looking forward to bringing back the full Sergis experience.
Along with replacing the roof, the interior of the building was completely gutted and rebuilt during renovations. Nonetheless, longtime patrons should expect few changes in menu or decor when they return.
All the customers, everybodys always asking me, when will you come back? Mr. Spagnolo said. The estimated reopening was pushed back several times as the lengthy repairs continued, but now the wait is over.
Only the restaurant was reopened Wednesday. The banquet hall next door will need a few more weeks of repair.
The Spagnolo family owns the 38 Market St. location they occupied for the last year. Mr. Spagnolo said there are no new tenants for the building lined up, as he has been focusing on the repairs.
