Catering to the after-work crowd, a Tuesday-evening farmers market will kick off next week at North Country Farms flour mill, 24685 Route 37, Watertown.
Thirteen vendors will set up shop from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the buildings front lawn to sell fresh produce, meats, cheese, coffee, wine and other novelties. The market will be held during the same hours Tuesdays through the end of October.
Kevin L. Richardson, president of North Country Farms, said he launched the market as a way to cater to people with full-time jobs and soldiers at Fort Drum who arent able to attend the daytime farmers market Wednesdays in downtown Watertown.
Between Routes 11, 37 and Interstate 81, theres a lot of traffic coming home after work in this area, he said. After seeing the farmers markets success on Wednesdays downtown, I thought we could piggy back off that and start a farmers market closer to Fort Drum. We want to give small farms an opportunity to sell produce here.
The buildings spacious parking lot and front lawn bordering Route 37 provide plenty of space for growth at the farmers market, Mr. Richardson said.
The space is also a short driving distance from new apartment complexes in the area. Its three miles away from Eagle Ridge Village in LeRay, located the intersection of Route 342 and Goulds Corners Road. Some 700 families mostly military live in the newly constructed townhouses at the site. The market is also expected to be a popular stop for Fort Drum soldiers coming home to Watertown after work, traveling westbound on Route 342 before heading south on Route 37.
Theres a vast population with all these new housing developments for the military surrounding our facility, along with residents who live on Route 37, Mr. Richardson said.
Members of the Pamelia Planning Board, which approved the farmers market location this month, were all enthusiastic about the plan, said board member Walter H. VanTassel.
We think the market will be good for not just the military population, but everyone in the local community, he said.
Tuesdays market will include the following vendors: North Country Farms, Backwoods Greenery, Christman Roasters, Cranberry Ridge Farm, Grindstone Farm, Martins Pretzel, Sweet Pea Farms, Adirondack Beef Co., 4 Paws Barkerie, Bechaz Riverdale Cheese, Adirondack Acres, Black River Cattle Co. and Thousand Islands Winery.
