General Brown school board to discuss filling seat

DEXTER — Nearly two months after General Brown Central School board members decided to fill the remaining year of a three-year board term, they now must decide how to proceed with filling the remaining two years of another member’s term.

During the board’s annual organizational meeting last week, newly elected President Jeffrey West announced Cynthia L. Humerickhouse resigned just one year after she won a three-year term.

Members had discussed bumping new member Jamie Lee up to the two-year term since she had received enough votes in May to fill the one year left in John Hardy’s term. That is something that new Superintendent Cammy J. Morrison said the school district will seek a legal opinion on.

Mr. West said board members could leave the seat empty or fill it in with the next-place vote getter. The latter is what newly elected board Vice President Daniel J. Dupee II said the district historically has done.

Next in line to receive the fill-in appointment would be Christopher J. Littell, the candidate who wasn’t elected for any term. Sandy Y. Klindt and Brien M. Spooner both were elected to three-year terms in May.

The board is expected to discuss the situation at its monthly meeting in August.

Meanwhile, Mr. West initiated conversation among board members during the July meeting about board goals. Last year, the board was scrutinized for taking too long to set its goals for the 2012-13 school year. Mr. West said the board will set a special meeting date specifically to discuss its goals for the 2013-14 school year.
