4-H Camp Wabasso gets new health curriculum

REDWOOD — When children attend 4-H Camp Wabasso this summer, they’ll do more than sing campfire songs and make arts and crafts.

They’ll learn how to lead a healthier lifestyle and hopefully pass information along to family members at home, according to Amanda R. Root, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County’s resource educator.

“We were part of a grant in a six-county 4-H region to use the ‘Choose Health’ program and reach out to a significant amount of youth,” Mrs. Root said. “Kids will go through various stations where they will do games, have food tastings and do some cooking. It gives us a very specific focus.”

Examples of activities include determining how much sugar is in soda or sweetened drinks by checking the label and measuring teaspoons of sugar, and measuring fat content by scooping Crisco to represent fat. Children also will learn to make flavored water using fruit.

The curriculum fits with the 4-H program’s name, as “health” is one of the four H’s. The other three are “head,” “heart” and “hands.”

Mrs. Root said the new program falls in line with what the extension office already is doing with its Adopting Healthy Habits initiative, which aims to help combat childhood obesity. The curriculum goes beyond the camp experiences, as the extension office’s nutrition educators use the curriculum at schools.
