FAA audit addresses runway at Massena International Airport

MASSENA — It’s been a check mark in the town’s Federal Aviation Administration audit for two years, and Highway Superintendent Frank J. Diagostino said it’s time to begin addressing how to fund rehabilitation of the runway at the Massena International Airport.

“It’s already been in the audit for two years. We’ve been discussing it for two years,” Mr. Diagostino said.

“We’re dealing with the striping, painting and marking of the runway,” basically saying the town has to do something about it, he said. “If it’s not done, they can pull our certification.”

Although they aren’t issues that affect the operation of the airport runway, Deputy Town Supervisor Albert N. Nicola said, “It’s a thing that we can’t delay doing. It has to be done.”

And while Mr. Nicola said the runway has the required stripes, paint and markings, it’s in need of repair.

“There’s still striping there. But it’s chipped and cracked,” he said.

The problem is funding.

Mr. Diagostino said federal funding is available, but it hasn’t yet been released.

If the funding is released by September, he said, the town could schedule the work for next year.

“The first thing we have to do is remove the lettering,” he said.

Mr. Nicola said the town needs to plot how it would move forward with the project without federal funding being immediately available.

“We’ll sit with Frank and find out when and how we’re going to do it,” he said. “We just have to do it.”
