City police charged 31-year-old Breanna L. Simpson on Tuesday with second-degree murder following the stabbing death of her boyfriend, Henry J. Perkins Jr.
Simpson shared an apartment with Mr. Perkins, 34, at 117 J.B. Wise Place, Apt. 202, which was where the stabbing occurred at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The apartment is above the Rent-A-Zone store.
An autopsy was performed Monday. Up until Tuesday evening, city police described the incident a death investigation.
Detective Sgt. Joseph R. Donoghue said Tuesday afternoon the department was leaning toward a person of interest in the investigation, but declined to identify the suspect. No one was in police custody at that time.
Last September, Mr. Perkins was stabbed in the right side of his back with a kitchen knife during an argument with his girlfriend, Simpson. She subsequently was charged by city police with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon in that incident. She pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree assault and was sentenced to three years probation, 75 hours of community service and a $250 fine.
Mr. Perkins recovered from his injuries in that incident.
His family members confirmed Monday that he moved in with Simpson to the Public Square apartment about three weeks before his death.
Jefferson County 911 dispatchers got a call at 6:46 p.m. Sunday about the stabbing. Later that night, police took bags of evidence from the scene, Mr. Donoghue said.
Representatives from the Jefferson County district attorneys office also were at the scene.
According to a city police news release issued Tuesday evening, Simpson is being held at the Metro-Jeff Public Safety Building without bail. She will be arraigned today in City Court before Judge Eugene R. Renzi.
