U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer is urging the Army to protect the three brigade combat teams headquartered at Fort Drum from cuts called for in the Armys 2020 force structure realignment.
The Army is expected to cut eight to 10 BCTs by the end of fiscal year 2017 and will announce which installations will lose BCTs later this month.
Three of the 10th Mountain Divisions four BCTs are stationed at Fort Drum. The fourth is based at Fort Polk, La.
I called the Secretary of the Army to urge that if the Army determines it is necessary to cut a Brigade Combat Team from the 10th Mountain Division, then the Army should take this opportunity to consolidate the division at Fort Drum, Sen. Schumer said in a news release.
He said that consolidating the division at Fort Drum would make sense from both a military and an economic standpoint by improving command and control, reducing communication and travel costs, and taking advantage of the well-equipped infrastructure of the surrounding community to support the base.
