ANTWERP — The village on Thursday was awarded $360,000 in federal funding to improve its wastewater treatment facility.

The grant funding was announced in a news release from Democratic U.S. Sens. Kirsten E. Gillibrand and Charles E. Schumer.

The federal support comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program.

Sen. Gillibrand said in a statement that projects such as improving the treatment plant could deliver clean water to more people and boost the local economy.

“Upgrading water infrastructure is an effective way to attract new businesses and support new local jobs,” she said.

Sen. Schumer said the funds would help improve the quality of life for the area.

The federal grant is on top of $2,910,000 in state funding for the water project.

Village Mayor Calvin L. Jones said in a statement that state and federal support for the project took some of the burden of the project off village residents.

“The village would not have been able to undertake the project alone, but thanks to the combined efforts of several individuals from Federal and State agencies we will be able to complete this greatly needed project,” he said.
