LOWVILLE The Lowville Academy and Central School District Board has chosen a longtime administrator at South Lewis Central School to serve as its elementary principal.
Board members on Monday appointed Philomena B. Goss, who has spent the past 14 years as South Lewiss middle school principal, to the post, effective July 29.
Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Goss has been involved with many programmatic changes, including the redesign of schedules to allow more opportunities for academic intervention services and an inclusion of a remediation period during the instructional day, states a release from the Lowville district.
She has also helped design a new accelerated mathematics program based on the common core curriculum and facilitate last years transition of the fifth grade from elementary schools to the middle school building at South Lewis.
This involved designing the academic program and schedule, providing professional development to the staff that were new to the building and introducing students to their new school, the release states.
Mrs. Goss has been responsible for all aspects of leading instruction and managing the middle school building and has additionally served as the districts director of fine arts, it states.
Eight people applied for the position; four of them were interviewed by a committee of parents, a committee of elementary faculty and staff members, and the superintendent, and the top three were interviewed by school board members, according to Superintendent Cheryl R. Steckly.
After reviewing feedback from all parties involved in the interview process, the board chose to offer the position to Mrs. Goss, she said.
Mrs. Steckly had served as elementary principal but was appointed superintendent at the start of this school year, first on an interim basis and later permanently.
Marie L. Western, who served for the past year as interim elementary principal, will remain with the district in another administrative position, Mrs. Steckly said.
Before going to South Lewis, Mrs. Goss was an elementary teacher in the Watertown City School District.
She earned a bachelors degree in education from SUNY Oswego, a masters degree in education from SUNY Potsdam and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from SUNY Oswego.
Mrs. Goss lives in Lowville with her husband, Robert, the athletic director at Lowville Academy. They have one son.
