MASSENA The St. Lawrence County Planning Board this week gave the green light to a proposal to build a Nice N Easy convenience store at the corner of Main Street and East Orvis Street.
John P. and Edward J. Valentine, brothers who co-own Valentine Stores, said theyre hoping to begin construction of their new store this fall, but they are not yet sure though when Massenas newest convenience store will open.
We would like to start construction this fall, Edward said. Theres another demolition, and theres a lot of work.
The additional demolition referred to by Mr. Valentine is a green building that formerly housed several apartments across from the post office on Main Street.
Were going to get rid of that, John said. Its an eyesore.
Speaking on behalf of the Massena Business Development Corp. and the Massena Downtown Coalition, Michael V. Almasian thanked the brothers for their planned investment in Massena, as well as for the abundance of green space planned around the property.
Both the BDC and MDC would like to meet with you and have a cooperative relationship, Mr. Almasian said.
Mr. Almasian added that the coalition is reviewing the villages code, as part of the efforts to make downtown vibrant again.
Edward Valentine also noted that Massenas Nice N Easy will be the first in the chain to include a drive-through window.
The property will include a 5,895-square-foot convenience store and canopy with six gas pump islands for a total of 12 pumps.
