Commission allows jails to provide law materials electronically

State Commission of Correction members approved a proposal Tuesday morning to allow counties to forgo brick-and-mortar law libraries in their jails in favor of electronic access to legal materials.

The regulation, which is projected to save counties an average of $5,000 a year, will allow jail administrators to stop updating law books they are required to provide to inmates.

Instead, administrators can provide electronic access to the materials, which they can pay for with profits from the jail’s commissary.

The regulation will apply to all counties and the New York City Department of Corrections but will not affect state prisons.
