SLC, Potsdam boys lacrosse teams win playoff openers; Potsdam girls upended

BRASHER FALLS - The St. Lawrence Central varsity lacrosse teams made an overpowering recovery from a fast Colton-Pierrepont start en route to posting a 14-1 win in the first round of the Section 10 Class C playoffs on Monday.

Cody Green gave the visiting Colts the early lead when he converting on an assist from Gyle Dominy just 1:30 into the game. The Larries worked their back with a pair of goals in the first quarter then took control with six more unanswered goals in the second.

Cody Burns anchored a balanced SLC attack with two goals and four assists. Lukas Arquiett chipped in two goals and three helpers. Blake Baldwin fashioned four goals. Styles Arquiett broke through for another three goals. Marshall Burninghausen finished with two goals and one assist while Brody Simonds tallied a goal as the Larries improved to 13-2 overall. Ian Lynch (2 assists), Eric Lynch (1 assist) and Nick Randall (1 assist) also contributed toward the winning effort.

Kody Kocsis also logged an assist while working the crease for 10 saves in the win. Craig Miller turned aside 15 shots for the Colts (0-16).

The Larries will now play host to Canton this afternoon at 5 p.m. in the semi-final round. The Bears advanced via a 12-2 win over OFA at the SUNY Canton turf while Potsdam turned back Saranac Lake 10-7 in a Monday evening playoff opener.

Potsdam 10, Saranac Lake 7: After battling to a 3-3 tie through the first quarter, the Sandstoners outscored the Red Storm 5-1 in the second en route to earning the hard-fought win.

“This was a tough game. They did a good job of packing things in defensively and it took us a little while to get going,” noted coach Kevin Talcott afterward. “I was happy with the way we played.”

With the win, the Sandstoners (8-9) earned a chance to take on undefeated top seed Salmon River in the semi-finals this afternoon in Fort Covington starting at 5 p.m.

Hayden Hart tallied a goal and six assists in the win over the Red Storm. Garrett Kilgore struck for three goals and one helper. Steven Lewis (1 assist) and Kyle Grant each netted a pair of goals while Chris Stone (1 assist) and Sam Woods both notched singletons.

Seth Pickering sparked the Red Storm offense with five goals while Jeff Stevens contributed two goals and an assist.

Jason Cardinal made 10 saves backstopping the win and Mike Burpoe stopped 13 shots in the loss.

Canton 12, OFA 2: Peyton Vanbibber generated three goals and Garrett Glasglow connected for two goals and two assists as the Bears steadily pulled away from a 4-1 first-quarter lead. Jake Facey also netted a pair of goals while Ryan Huiatt, Jack Elberty, Josh Pierson, Isaac Thrasher and Cody Moore all scored once.

Andrew Roddy connected for the two Blue Devils goals.

Nate Gibson and Andrew McCormick combined to backstop the win while Spencer Lawrence provided 15 saves for OFA.

HEUVELTON GIRLS UPEND POTSDAM

A promisng season ended on a disappointing note for the Potsdam Central varsity girls lacrosse team.

After contending for the regular season title after handing Massena its first NAC loss in three season, the Lady Sandstoners saw their hopes of playing for the Section 10 Class C title end in a 6-5 loss at home to Heuvelton.

“It just wasn’t our day,” noted coach Sarah Bullard after her third-seeded squad was knocked off by the sixth-seeded Lady Bulldogs.

Olivia St. Pierre scored the first goal of the game with 13:42 left in the first half for Heuvelton but Hannah Drechsel tied the game with 12:08 for Potsdam. Jackie Sovie, a Lisbon student and Heuvelton’s leading scorer, went on to score the next two goals at 10:11 and 2:46 left in the first half followed by goals by Olivia St. Pierre (1:06) and Maddie St. Pierre (:41.9) as the Lady Bulldogs worked their way to a 5-1 halftime lead.

The Lady Sandstoners began to find their offensive stride in the second half scoring with 18:23 and 10:05 remaining to cut the deficit to 5-3 on goals from Jenny Tardelli and Ally Miller. Sovie scored her third goal in the game with 9:00 left to put Heuvelton ahead 6-3 and the Lady Bulldogs held to the Lady Sandstoners to a pair of goals in the final 20 seconds by Michaela Cole (:19.1) and Miller (:02.5).

“We really played a great first half. Defensively, Heather Thompson made some great stops early and Kylie Piercey, Danielle Moyer and Ashlyn Foster marked up well but Potsdam came right back at us in the second half,” said HCS coach Becky Kelley who won her first game against Potsdam as head coach.

Thompson finished with seven saves backstopping the win while Katelyn Bloom turned aside seven shots for Potsdam, which closed its season at 10-7.

Heuvelton (4-12) will now get set to play at second-seeded Canton in the semi-finals on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Saranac Lake 10, OFA 9: In the other Class C opener on Monday, the host Red Storm rallied from a 7-4 halftime deficit to claim the win over the Lady Blue Devils. Kylie Sappone netted four goals in the winning effort and Sheila Decker made 12 saves backstopping the win.

Nikki Holmes scored three times for OFA while Mackenzie Bresett (2 assists) and Kaitlin Sheppard (1 assist) each finished with a pair of goals and Erica Chase turned aside 12 of the shots she faced.

The Red Storm (6-7) will now travel to Massena on Wednesday to take on the top-seeded Lady Raiders at Mike Nicholas Field starting at 5 p.m.
