CARTHAGE — A Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce board member has proposed allowing young people to sell handmade items at the Carthage Farmers Market.

Mea M. Rosner told the chamber board that a friend of her son’s had given gifts of braided key chains and bracelets that he had considered selling on the Internet.

“Two weeks later I saw similar key chains in an airport kiosk on our way to Pensacola, Fla.,” Mrs. Rosner said. “I thought, ‘Wow, that kid is pretty insightful to not only make these things, but also know that they were selling currently in the public interest.’”

She had a similar experience with her daughter and her friend who makes scented soaps and wanted to sell them at school.

With the blessings of the chamber board, Mrs. Rosner solicited the aid of Carthage Central School District Superintendent Peter J. Turner to reach out to schoolchildren. Mr. Turner encouraged the school principals to suggest to interested students that they contact Mrs. Rosner for inclusion in the proposed project.

The idea is to allow young people to sell items they have made at a chamber-run booth at the farmers market. The farmers market would give young entrepreneurs exposure to marketing their wares and provide interaction with customers. Different young business owners would be featured each week, possibly on a rotation.

At this point, the project is in the conceptional stage and may not be implemented until next year.
