Fort Drum man admits in federal court to possessing child pornography

A Fort Drum man admitted Monday in federal court that he possessed pornographic images of children he obtained over the Internet.

James D. Hobson, age not available, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, Syracuse, to single counts of distribution of and receipt of child pornography and three counts of possession of child pornography. Sentencing was set for Sept. 17.

He was charged with crimes in a five-count indictment handed up in March. According to a criminal complaint filed in October in the matter, a federal undercover agent was using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program July 23 when the agent noted an Internet protocol address offering a number of files available for downloading. The agent downloaded five files, each of which allegedly contained child pornography.

The special agent with the Department of Homeland Security then determined which company provided the IP address, and the company provided the physical address of the subscriber associated with the IP address. The agent and other law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the residence of Mr. Hobson, who was not home when the premises were searched.

According to the indictment, 22 optical disks allegedly containing pornographic images were recovered from a bedroom dresser during the search. Three more disks allegedly were found on a bookshelf in the bedroom. According to the complaint, Mr. Hobson admitted that he has been using the Internet to obtain child pornography for about 12 years and that he possessed about 100 gigabytes of the material.

He remains in U.S. marshals’ custody awaiting sentence.
