POTSDAM — Workers will begin repairs today on the damaged roof at the extension to Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s campus at 49 Lawrence Ave.

The extension is still under construction. Part of the wooden frame roof collapsed under heavy winds Sunday afternoon.

“We don’t know the extent of the damage, but it looks like about a quarter of the trusses were damaged,” hospital spokeswoman Rebecca J. Faber said.

According to project manager Justin Blanchard, of Danko Construction, Massena, the damage may be less than originally estimated. When repairs begin today, each truss will be examined individually to determine the extent of the damage.

“We’ll pull them one by one and inspect them,” he said.

The incident is expected to delay the project by only a few days. The hospital will not know the cost of repairs until the damaged has been assessed fully. The exact cause of the collapse is unknown, although it has been attributed to high winds. The trusses were installed and braced properly, according to Mr. Blanchard.

High winds knocked down trees and power lines in Potsdam on Sunday. Speeds approached 30 mph in the afternoon, with gusts up to 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Lavallee Brensinger, the Manchester, N.H., architectural firm behind the project, will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse, Ms. Faber said.

Engineers and contractors were at the site Monday to begin assessing the damage.

“It’s not as bad as everybody thought,” Mr. Blanchard said. “It’s not going to be too bad of a delay at all.”

The $5.5 million extension is scheduled to be completed by late summer. It will provide offices for 10 primary-care physicians and an urgent-care facility. The hospital created the extension in its efforts to expand its ranks by recruiting new doctors.
