CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators, meeting in special session Monday, formally requested the enactment of a state Senate bill and reiterated its support of an Assembly bill to grant it authority to raise the local sales tax from 3 to 4 percent.

The Assembly bill has moved out of the Ways and Means Committee and is headed to the floor, said Board Chairman Jonathan S. Putney, D-Waddington. Legislators said they would be happy if the bills pass in time for the county to acquire additional revenue starting in December.

While the county legislators voted 14-0 with Legislator Alex A. MacKinnon, R-Fowler, absent, not all residents share that opinion, so the county should be fiscally prudent, said Legislator Daniel F. Parker, R-Potsdam.

“We don’t have universal support for this,” he said.
