Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, was one of 126 members of the House of Representatives to sign a letter requesting Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to rethink planned civilian furloughs linked to sequestration.

The letter, written by Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, argues that the furloughs would affect mission readiness and, if done uniformly, would punish organizations that have streamlined their operations.

Current plans are for civilians to have 14 furlough days to be distributed until the end of September, down from the original count of 22.

The full letter, which was sent April 23, can be found online at www.bit.ly/143iNPt.
