Ogdensburg Public Librarys plan to publish a fundraising dessert cookbook next fall will take on a competitive flavor later this month.
The librarys Friends of the Library support group is sponsoring a dessert-baking contest May 22 to generate recipes for the publication.
The contest at the library, located at 312 Washington St., will hopefully provide a promising start.
Itd better, said senior library clerk Jo Ellen Murray.
We need 150 recipes by June 1, she said, adding that about 15 have been sent in so far.
The contest and the book have four categories, cookies/bars/candies, cakes and pies, special desserts and gluten-free.
Ms. Murray said she and library clerk Julie F. Gebo were discussing ideas on how best to promote the cookbook a making the project something to enjoy at the same time.
We came up with it together, Ms. Murray said.
And it will get the community involved, too, Ms. Gebo added.
A panel of judges is being formed that so far includes Freight House co-owner Timothy J. McCabe and BOCES Northwest Tech culinary arts program director Stephen C. Putman.
All entries must be brought to the library between 4 and 6 p.m. with judging for first-, second- and third-place winners in each category to start at 6:30 p.m.
The Friends will cover the cost of getting the hard-cover, three-ring binder cookbook - which will be entitled Librarys Just Desserts - for up to 200 copies at a per copy cost that has yet to be determined.
The cookbooks publication and sale will coincide with the Friends annual fall book fair in November, and proceeds will be used to buy books and learning materials for the library.
