The Northern Regional Center for Independent Living and Families Together in the North Country have partnered with the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park to raise awareness of children’s mental health issues.

To celebrate May as Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month, there will be a tree planting and dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday at the zoo.

The event is open to the public and attendees are encouraged to wear green, which in the 1800s was used to brand people who were labeled “insane,” according to an NRCIL released statement. Now, mental health advocates wear the color green to signify new life, growth and beginnings.
