POTSDAM Village planning officials have approved a site plan application for an addition to the Stewarts at 30 Maple St., a former Sugarcreek convenience store.
Stewarts plans to add to the rear of the store to provide space for loading and storage.
Planning Board members last week made a few recommendations to the site plan regarding the entrance to the parking lot and the installation of bike racks outside the store.
Frederick J. Hanss, village director of planning and development, recommended installation of a bike rack. There are a lot of university people going past, and having bike access there for those people makes sense, Mr. Hanss said.
Planning Board members also want directional arrows painted to direct traffic entering the convenience store and gas station in order to improve safety on the often-busy Maple Street.
Mr. Hanss said the board also wants the entrance/exit narrowed to an area wide enough for only two cars. He said traffic can be less predictable when motorists have more space than needed to pull into and out of a parking lot.
However, the owners will have to seek approval from the state Department of Transportation before they can adjust the width of that space.
