OGDENSBURG — A group of veterans’ supporters plans to show its thanks to one area veteran and his or her family.

Amvets Post 19 Auxiliary once again is looking to help a veteran in need using funds raised from its annual variety show

“We would like them to know they are not forgotten,” Auxiliary Americanism Officer Charlene R. Romano said. “No matter if they are no longer still serving, they still need to know they are precious to us.”

The program first was held last year, when group members raised money to build a pressure-treated porch for city resident and Army veteran Jeffery A. Mooney.

“It was such a great project,” committee co-chairwoman Susan L. House said. “Mr. Mooney was afraid his family members would fall. Mr. Mooney and his wife are disabled, so they really could not have built it without some help.”

With the success of last year’s program, the 100-member auxiliary decided to make it annual. “It was such an awesome feeling to be able to give back to a veteran that needed it and who has done so much for us,” Ms. Romano said.

Veterans or those looking to nominate a veteran should submit letters saying what they need and why to 609 Paterson St., she said. A committee composed of auxiliary members then will choose the recipient based on need and feasibility.

“There is certainly no set thing we are looking for—be it for their house, their car, or even to pay their taxes,” Ms. Romano said.

The selected project will be named after the Amvets Salute to Veterans Variety Show on May 18. The group hopes to match or increase last year’s proceeds of $1,000, Ms. House said.

The show is open to the public. The performers will be local artists including the Waddington-based band Acoustic Brothers, who will play from 8:30 to 11 p.m.

The dinner begins at 5 p.m. and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12.50 at the door.
