POTSDAM When Sam Spagnola talks about reopening Sergis Italian Restaurant at 10 Market St., he smiles.
Mr. Spagnola has served pizzas and Italian food from the same familiar location since 1972. On July 19, a windstorm tore the roof off the building. Water poured in, destroying much of the interior.
He and his family have since operated the restaurant just down the street at their property at 38 Market St. Now, 10 months after the storm, renovations are complete and the restaurant is nearly ready to return to its original location.
Everybody asks me when will I come back home. They see me on the street, and they ask me, When are you going to move? Mr. Spagnola said.
The restaurant will reopen sometime in May, followed by the banquet hall in June.
While the menu and decor will be familiar to longtime patrons, the building was completely rehabilitated from top to bottom to repair all of the damage.
Its completely new, from the basement to the roof, Mr. Spagnola said.
The temporary location has been fine, Mr. Spagnola said, but there is no place like home.
Weve been pretty good here. Theres not enough space to do what we like, he said.
The smaller kitchen has required a smaller menu. Popular items like chicken wings have not been available since the move.
The full menu will be reintroduced once Sergis returns to 10 Market St.
Renovations are still underway, and a specific date for the return has not yet been set.
