FORT COVINGTON - The Massena Central varsity baseball team scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away to a 5-1 NAC Central Division victory on Monday.

The setback drops the Shamrocks to 1-3 on the season while the Red Raiders improve to 2-2 in league play, 4-4 overall.

“It seems like every game we have that one bad inning that hurts us on the scoreboard,” stated Salmon River Coach Ben Barkley.

“The kids did a nice job, with several of them playing out of position,” explained Barkley. “I felt Zack Smith did a terrific job in his varsity debut on the mound. He struck out the side in the first inning and lasted until the fifth inning when I felt he was running out of gas.”

Smith finished with four strikeouts and two walks, giving up three earned runs on six hits. He gave way to Devin LaPage for the final two innings, as LaPage did not serve up a hit, but walked two with a pair of strikeouts.

But the story was the Massena pitching, as a pair of Red Raider hurlers limited the Shamrocks to just two hits in the game, both coming off the bat of Bert Gray. Isiah Dillabough tossed the first four innings and left with the score tied at 1-all. Joey Labelle relieved in the fifth inning and was the benefactor of a four-run inning to earn the mound win. The Massena duo combined to strike out seven with four walks as the Red Raiders evened their record at 2-2 in NAC Central Division action and 4-4 overall.

Zach Russaw led Massena with a pair of singles while Labelle and Conor Paquin both had a base hit and both scored a run.

Gray singled and doubled for the Shamrocks (1-3).

In a non-league matchup, Franklin Academy ventured into Section 7 territory and returned home on the winning side of a 6-5 score against Peru.
