OGDENSBURG — Laura A. Foster on Friday was named interim executive director of the Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington St.

Ms. Foster, the museum’s curator since 1989, will lead the facility once current Executive Director Edward A. LaVarnway retires June 1.

“I was both thrilled and deeply satisfied that the museum’s trustees selected Laura Foster to succeed me as executive director,” Mr. LaVarnway said. “Laura brings an unmatched knowledge of this institution and Frederic Remington to the job.”

Ms. Foster, 47, a native of Potsdam and a resident of Canton, will have interim status for six months, with a $12,500 bump in her $44,250 annual salary, and hold down both jobs. She then will be evaluated, and is expected to be named permanent executive director and curator.

“I’m sure that I’ll be able to do the jobs,” Ms. Foster said. “I have very high hopes.”

So does William M. Cavanaugh, president of the museum’s board of trustees.

“With the appointment of Laura, we are opening a new chapter in the life of this world-class museum,” Mr. Cavanaugh said Friday.

“This is a very exciting time for the museum and for Ogdensburg. We wish Laura the very best and look forward to working with her. No one knows the museum better than Laura,” he said.

Ms. Foster, one of 24 candidates for the job, is looking ahead to new double duty.

“I am very pleased to be moving into the interim executive director role,” she said. “This feels like a natural transition at this point in my career. Directing the museum while continuing my curatorial duties will be a big load, but I’m excited to take it on. With nearly 24 years as the museum’s curator, the move should be a smooth transition. I look forward to working closely with the board and staff to accomplish much.”

“I look forward to renewing old connections and making new ones,” Ms. Foster said. “I welcome wisdom and ideas from all of the museum’s friends.”
