AKWESASNE - Lynn Thompson, co-owner of the new Akwesasne Mini Mart, presented a $5,000 check to Tribal Police Corporal PJ Burns, organizer of the “Kids for Fishing” program.

Thompson presented the check on behalf of the Akwesasne Convenience Store Association. Tribal Chief Ron LaFrance was on hand as a representative of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. “I’m glad to see the convenience store association taking such a pro-active role in the community,” he said. “Five thousand dollars is a substantial commitment to the well-being of the youth in our community.”

Lynn Thompson, Wallace Thompson, Angela Thompson and George Delorimiere are co-owners of the new mini-mart, which celebrated its grand opening on April 20. “This store is a welcome addition to the Akwesasne business community,” said PJ Burns. “Now people have a place to go if they need to pick up some food items and they don’t have to travel very far.”

The “Kids for Fishing” program is the result of many agencies and organizations coming together to promote healthy activities, boating safety and drug prevention. The event involves many volunteers including professional fishermen, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, tribal agencies and various community sponsors.

“The event could not be possible without the help of so many volunteers and sponsors who have so generously given of their time and money,” Burns said.

The 2012 program was the second year the program was held and involved 30 kids. Burns plan on holding the event annually.

Corporal Burns has scheduled this year’s event for May 11. Community members who are interested in being involved with the program can contact Corporal Burns at 518 521 8479.
