Norwood-Norfolk captures Big Green Championships

Norwood-Norfolk claimed the 16th annual Big Green Softball Classic on Saturday winning a 16-2 decision in the championship game against host Hermon-DeKalb.

Norwood-Norfolk capped a big sequence of three wins in two days, which started with a 3-1 decision over Class C arch rival St. Lawrence Central on Friday.

“St. Lawrence Central was always a hurdle for us. Coach Brown lives in Norwood and all the kids know him. I always told the kids we could win if we put ourselves to it. Today, we didn’t have a let down against some different style pitchers,” said N-N coach Becky Byrns.

Katie Ames, who pitched in a pair of wins on Saturday, received the Defensive MVP Award while Mickey Fregoe earned the Offensive MVP Award.

Edwards-Knox took second place with a 10-7 decision over Colton-Pierrepont in the consolation game. Norwood-Norfolk won 17-1 over Edwards-Knox in game one while Hermon-DeKalb topped Colton-Pierrepont 11-8 in its opener.

N-N 16, H-D 2: Winning pitcher Katie Ames fanned five, walked one and allowed one hit in three innings. She also produced a 2-3 effort with a two run triple in the second inning. Megan Stevenson went 2-2 with three runs scored while Cortney Harvey recorded a RBI triple. Kirsten Barkley (2 runs) and Jorgi LeBarge (2 runs) each singled.

Gabby Cole pitched three innings of relief.

Courtney Harrington drilled a RBI double in the fourth inning and scored for H-D. Xann Gotham went 1-1 with a double and Clarissa Davis (run scored) and Sabrina Wood each singled.

Harrington fanned seven and walked five but was hurt by five H-D errors - three in the first two innings.

E-K 10, C-P 7: Four runs in the first and five in the third keyed the win for the Cougars. Mackenzie Hall and Mollee Burger supplied a double and a single and Harleigh LeBarge stroked a double and scored twice. Sam Ellison added two singles while Dakotah Bacon, Makayla Bacon, Heather Finnerty and Kassie Whitford each singled. Andrea Aldous and Kathryn Miller each singled twice for C-P and Morgan Doyle and Eve Whalen singled.

Harleigh LeBarge (4IP) and Makayla Bacon (2IP) fanned six batters combining in the win.

Eve Whalen was saddled with the loss.

N-N 17, E-K 1: Dakotah Bacon led off the game with a single and scored the Cougars lone run as Katie Ames tossed an struckout three and walked one in a three inning one hitter for the Flyers. Gabby Cole struckout one and allowed two singles to E-K’s Makayla Bacon and Brittany Taylor. Cortney Harvey drilled a two run double in a six run second inning where N-N took control at 10-1. Megan Stevenson and Harvey (3RBI) finished with a double and two singles in a 3-4 effort.Mickey Fregoe finished 2-3 with a double and scored three times. Aleah Palmer went 2-2 with three RBI. Kirsten Barkley (1-3 3rs), Carlie Weaver (4 rs), and Cortney Wagstaff (1-3_ all contributed.

Harleigh LeBarge took the loss.

H-D 11, C-P 8: The Demons weathered an early two run homerun by Andrea Aldous from the Colts in the first inning and scored four times in the third to tie it at 4-4 and scored seven in the sixth inning for the win.

Courtney Harrington fanned nine and surrended 10 walks and four hits. Courtney Harrington and Sabrina Wood each doubled while Xann Gotham, Chelsey MacKay, Clarissa Davis, all singled. Brooke Woodrow and Courtnay Davis each scored twice. Aldous finished with a homerun and a single for C-P while Morgan Doyle, Kelsey Gilbert, Eve Whalen and Kathryn Miller each singled.
