ADAMS — The approximately 50 years of service by village resident Marcia A. Reed will be honored today as she is named South Jefferson Citizen of the Year.

“It’s something I’ve always done during my life, giving back for everything people have done for me,” Mrs. Reed said. “I just enjoy working with people and learning new things.”

Mrs. Reed’s long list of work in the community includes 46 years as a Sunday school teacher at Adams United Methodist Church, along with several years volunteering at the Rohde Center, Historical Association of South Jefferson, Salvation Army, South Jefferson Central School District and the Cheddar Cheese festival.

Mrs. Reed, who moved to the village when she was 5 years old, said her interest in volunteering began when she was 15, when her father was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Mrs. Reed said she remembers an outpouring of support from the community and her family’s church.

“I resolved when I was old enough, I would do my best to return all that was given to me and my family,” she said.

By age 19, Mrs. Reed had dedicated herself to volunteer work.

“I just added this, added that,” she explained.

Connie A. Elliott, president of the South Jeff Chamber of Commerce, which will present the award, said “She has a beautiful personality. Everything about her shines.”

Mrs. Reed will receive the award at 11 a.m. today during the chamber’s Arbor Day Celebration, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Jefferson High School.
