Carthage Farmers Market preparing to open May 31

WEST CARTHAGE — The Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its May 31 season opener for the Carthage Farmers Market and held a meeting for interested vendors March 26 at the village municipal building.

Chamber President Teri L. Ellis told prospective vendors that the market committee is adopting a stricter application process and will not accept applications “on the spot” during market days. Applications are required and there will be a two-week turnaround for acceptance or denial.

To limit duplication of services and offer a wider variety of products, the committee is instituting a ratio system. The committee will determine the number of each type of vendor — produce, crafts, jewelry — after all of the applications are received.

However, vendors returning from last year will not be excluded because of the ratio system.

“We want to limit vendors of some types and have a good balance,” Mrs. Ellis said. “We are often asked, ‘Is this a craft show or farmers market?’”

Vendors at the market must be residents of Jefferson, Lewis or St. Lawrence counties. The market allows farm products, plants, flowers and handmade items. The in-season produce must come from within the state or bordering states and the vendor must produce at least 50 percent of the goods. Crafts must be handmade by the vendor in the tri-county area.

The vendors were reminded that by village law, dogs are not permitted at the market.

The seasonal fees have remained the same: $50 per unit outside the pavilion and $70 per space inside. Vendors are limited to two spaces. Returning vendors will be given preference for location.

The market on Riverside Drive, Carthage, operates from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays through Oct. 25. Vendors wishing to sell their wares at the market should call the chamber at 493-3590.
