An undisclosed developer has signed a purchase offer to buy the former Tallmadge Tire and Auto Service Center, 217 Arsenal St., from G&K Realty, owned by D. Edward Grant and Timothy E. Kelly.
The developer, who plans to retrofit the building, is expected to close on the deal in the next 30 days, Mr. Kelly said Thursday. The buildings property line borders that of Mercy Care Center, a complex located between Arsenal and Stone streets. COR Development Co., Fayetteville, purchased Mercy this month after its residents relocated to Samaritan Summit Village on outer Washington Street. Mr. Kelly confirmed Thursday that the former tire store which has been for sale for about a year was not purchased by COR. COR has announced it plans to demolish the former Mercy complex and build residential, retail and commercial space.
Mr. Kelly said he has not been contacted by COR about the pending sale of the building. Regarding the timing of the Mercy sale, he said, Im sure (COR) had an interest in our property, but we sold it three weeks before they said they were going to do anything with Mercy.
Mr. Kelly said the Arsenal Street building, which also was a former city fire station, could be used for any number of purposes.
The plan was to repair the building, fix it up and use it for something, he said. I cant speak for what the developer plans to do.
Alexandria Bay real estate developer P.J. Simao declined to comment Thursday when asked if he is seeking to purchase the property.
Mr. Kelly operated Tallmadge Tire and Auto Service Center there from 1992 until his retirement in 2001. The building has since been vacant, although the county has rented parking space there.
