HERRINGS — The village Board of Trustees has scheduled a public hearing for 6 p.m. Tuesday to present the tentative 2013-14 budget.

The $176,424 spending plan is up $46,696 over last year’s $129,728 budget. The tax levy was raised to $36,224, an increase of $3,664 over last year’s $32,560 levy.

The tax rate for the fiscal year that begins June 1 is $4.70 per $1,000 of assessed real property value. Last year’s rate was $4.20.

“We needed to create a new account for the water project as we are already incurring cost for the project,” Mayor Richard A. Beirman said.

The budget includes a $30,000 water fund and a $33,500 sewer fund. The village is embarking on a joint water project with the village of Deferiet.

“I feel good about the budget, I was hoping not to increase taxes, but due to the water project preparing to start, we needed to raise it to help with the cost. It still is a lot less the other villages have to pay,” Mr. Beirman said.

Following the public hearing, the board will come together to adopt the budget and discuss any other matters before it.
