War is awful, deadly, horrifying and often futile.

But war is also history.

So it is that the fifth annual War of 1812 Heritage Talks will be held Friday and Saturday at the Freight House Restaurant, 20 Market St.

If you have any interest in the wild War of 1812, you won’t be disappointed or out of place.

“It’s a core group,” said Barbara J. O’Keefe, president of the Fort La Présentation Association, describing most of the attendees. “But it’s also for people who love history.”

She said it is an international event.

“Local museums and heritage groups from both sides of the St. Lawrence have been invited to set up tabletop displays,” Mrs. O’Keefe said. “Our organizing team has put together a program with a broad appeal covering aspects of the war from New York City to Ohio: religion; women; Indian allies; battles; militia; navy; and privateers.”

The featured speakers will be War of 1812 scholars Faye Kert, Susan Spencer, James T. Brenner, Sandy Antal, Carl Benn, David Taylor, James Elliott and Ray Hobbs.

A production team from Syracuse-based WCNY-TV will be interviewing speakers and participants for the Public Broadcasting Service station’s documentary on the preservation of War of 1812 battlefields in Northern New York.

The Friday evening catered social is $10.

Admission on Saturday is $80.

Students and municipal historians get a 25 percent discount for Saturday’s seminars, which includes a continental breakfast and buffet lunch. That is $60.

Members of the Fort Association, Canadian Friends and Forsyth’s Rifles pay $70.

Registration can be done online at www.fort1749.com, where all the details of the heritage talks can be found. Those interested in attending, but unable to register online, should email fort1749@yahoo.com, so arrangements can be made to pay on arrival.

For more information, call Mrs. O’Keefe at 393-3315 or 323-2593.
