MADRID — The Madrid-Waddington Central School Board of Education will present voters with a budget next month that carries a 5.2 percent tax levy increase and increases spending by $808,085 over this year.

The total proposed budget for 2013-14 is $14,793,075, a 5.8 percent increase over the 2012-13 budget of $13,984,990.

The proposed tax levy is $3,872,614, a $190,743 increase over the 2012-13 levy of $3,681,871.

The projected fund balance allocation for next year’s budget is $750,000, leaving a projected unallocated fund balance of $730,000.

Significant increases in health insurance benefits and employee pension contributions explain the budget’s overall increase, Superintendent Lynn M. Roy said Wednesday. The total spending increase in both areas equals $411,938.

The budget will eliminate one position. Following the retirement of Randy White after 21 years of service, the position of bus garage head mechanic will be cut.

Staff reductions also were made in the school’s buildings and grounds and transportation departments.

No capital projects are in the works.

“We are just trying to maintain academic programs and continue the state’s Race to the Top initiatives of common core curriculum, data-driven instruction and effective teachers and leaders,” Mrs. Roy said.

A public hearing is set for 7 p.m. May 14 in the elementary cafeteria. The vote will take place from 1 to 8 p.m. May 21 in the junior-senior high school.
