LOWVILLE — Lewis County’s former recreational trail coordinator pleaded not guilty Friday in Lewis County Court to charges that he used more than $3,000 worth of county-bought gravel on the driveway at his town of Martinsburg home.

Robert C. Diehl, 43, of 3611 Gardner Road, had his case of third-degree grand larceny, first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and official misconduct adjourned to July 12, with a possible Sept. 9 trial date.

Mr. Diehl, fired by the Board of Legislators in February for alleged misconduct, was accused of submitting a purchase order and voucher for payment Oct. 25 for stone products from V.S. Virkler & Son, Lowville, that included $3,262.97 worth of gravel that was delivered to his residence for his personal use.

The payment, designated as “stones for trails,” was signed by Mr. Diehl as a legitimate county expense, the indictment states.
