The Family Counseling Service of Northern New York will receive a financial boost from the Watertown Trust.
On Thursday, the Watertown Local Development Corp., also known as the Watertown Trust, approved a five-year, $30,000 loan to Family Counseling.
Of the $30,000, $17,000 will be new money to the organization, said Donald W. Rutherford, the local development corporations CEO. The remaining $13,000 will be rolled over from a previous $30,000 loan that will be paid back over the next five years, he said.
Payment amounts on the loan will not change, he told the board.
The $30,000 loan will keep the agency operational until it can receive reimbursements for services it has provided to clients.
The loan comes as Family Counseling has begun talks to merge with Credo Community Center for the Treatment of Addictions. Credo officials confirmed last week the organizations were talking about combining services.
Without naming Credo, Mr. Rutherford said Thursday the entire loan would have to be paid if Family Counseling merges with another organization.
Before the vote, Mr. Rutherford praised Family Counselings work in the community, noting the help its clients have received.
Its a pretty valuable community service, said Mr. Rutherford, who served as president of Family Counselings board about 20 years ago.
WLDC board member Donald C. Alexander, who also is CEO of the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency, recused himself from the discussions about the loan because his wife, Collene D. Alexander, is Family Counselings CEO.
Founded in 1958, Family Counseling provides individual, marital and family counseling, sexual abuse and domestic violence counseling and clinical consultations. With offices at 120 Washington St., it has 17 employees who handle more than 1,000 visits per month.
Credo has provided services and treatment for more than 30 years to individuals, groups, families, adults, adolescents and children whose lives have been hurt by substance abuse, according to its website.
More information about the possible merger is believed to be forthcoming in about a month.
