MASSENA — The Massena Walmart was was closed for 24 hours after a blown transformer damaged the store’s electrical system Saturday night.

“The power went out at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday night,” Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling said Monday. “The store was evacuated. The store didn’t reopen for customers until 8 p.m. last night.”

The Massena Volunteer Fire Department and the Massena Electric Department responded to the store, 43 Stephenville Road, after a transformer behind the store began smoking. Employees moved perishable items to refrigerated trucks, including some that were supplied by Alex’s Ice Service.

“Anything that didn’t meet our standards as far as food products was discarded,” Ms. Whaling said.

The store was up and running again Sunday evening.
