CANTON — A former Canton volunteer fire chief was chosen Monday to fill an open seat on the village Board of Trustees.

Michael E. Dalton, 37 Judson St., was appointed by Mayor David P. Curry, a fellow Republican, to fill the seat vacated this month by longtime trustee Sylvia M. Kingston, a Democrat.

Ms. Kingston’s two-year term expires Dec. 2, so if Mr. Dalton wishes to remain a trustee, he will have to run in the November election. Trustees are paid $3,500 a year.

“I anticipate I’d run again,” Mr. Dalton said after being sworn in by Village Clerk Sally A. Noble. “I’m disappointed Sylvia is leaving but, at the same time, I’m willing to step up and serve out the rest of her time.”

Mr. Dalton was among three candidates who ran for two open seats in last November’s village trustee race.

With 770 votes, he fell short of winning a seat. The seats were won by Mary Ann Ashley, a Republican, with 830 votes, and political newcomer Daniel J. McDonnell, a Democrat, who garnered 805 votes.

Mr. Curry said he chose Mr. Dalton because he was interested at election time and remains interested in serving on the board. During Monday’s special board meeting, Mr. Curry also appointed Trustee Joseph J. Frank to replace Ms. Kingston as deputy mayor.
