The city just wants to say “thank you” to the dozens of people who serve on various boards, volunteer their time and make a difference in Watertown.

City officials have invited about 120 people to an event Monday commemorating “Volunteer Appreciation Day.” Many volunteers serve the city in various ways, some on boards and commissions with term commitments and some through community efforts.

For instance, West Ten Eyck Street resident Allison F. Gorham has been decorating a small park at Holcomb and South Massey streets for more than a year for holidays and also plants a colorful garden in the spring. She is among the invited guests to the event at 5 p.m. Monday in City Hall’s third-floor council chambers.

So is J. Clancy Hopkins, a longtime volunteer in the city historian’s room and a board member for the Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library.

A few months ago, Councilwoman Roxanne M. Burns suggested doing something to honor city volunteers, mentioning specifically Mr. Hopkins and all of his help for years.

A volunteer day was last held by the city about 12 years ago, said Elliott B. Nelson, confidential assistant to the city manager.

The volunteers will be given a key to the city and refreshments will be served.

Mayor Jeffrey E. Graham, along with council members Burns, Joseph M. Butler Jr., Teresa R. Macaluso and Jeffrey M. Smith, will host the event.

For further information or questions, call Mayor Graham at 785-7720.
