POTSDAM — SUNY Potsdam police are seeking public assistance as they investigate a sexual assault that allegedly occurred at a Potsdam fraternity house last weekend.

Dean of Students William G. Morris notified students of the investigation in a campus alert sent by email Tuesday evening.

“According to the police report, a female SUNY Potsdam student was invited to an off-campus fraternity house this weekend, where a male is alleged to have forcibly sexually assaulted her,” he wrote. “At this time, we have very little direct information to include not knowing if this was a recognized or unrecognized organization.”

University police declined to share any information about the investigation Wednesday. A Potsdam village police investigator responsible for the case was not available for comment.

In his email, Mr. Morris assured the campus that the school is concerned with the safety of all of its students and employees.

“Student safety is SUNY Potsdam’s number one priority,” he wrote. “The college believes that an immediate response to a reported incident of sexual misconduct is extremely important.”

The allegations occurred after SUNY Potsdam restricted Greek organizations’ recruitments in response to hazing complaints. The school has convened a task force to examine its relationship with Greek letter organizations

Information about the alleged assault should be reported to Lt. Mark R. Murray of the Potsdam village police, at 265-2121.
