MASSENA - For the second weekend in a row, the Massena Girls 5th-6th grade travel team claimed top honors as they traveled the weekend of February 16-17 to Champlain to play in the Third Annual Northern Booster Clubs Rising Stars Basketball Tournament.
In their opening game on Saturday, they played Morrisonville and the offense was clicking as Massena won 36-23. For the second game on Saturday, Massena played Ellenburg. It was defensive game with Massena winning by a score of 17-15.
The first game on Sunday saw Massena came up against Mooers CTC team, that they would eventually face in the championship game. Massena won this game 21-16.
In the semifinals Massena faced Heuvelton, the team they beat in the finals the previous weekend. As excepted the game was intense from start to finish with Massena coming out on top 23-17.
In the finals, Massena faced Mooers CTC again. The game was close in the first half before Massena pullled away in the second half for a 20-11 victory.
As a coach you hope to have a team that wants to play hard and step up, and this team does that game in and game out, noted coach Barrie Miller in commenting on how the team played great defense all weekend while many players rose to the occasion offensively when needed.
