OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad renovation of its new headquarters in the former Hacketts Hardware building won’t be finished by Friday as scheduled because a generator to provide backup power to the building won’t be delivered by then.

Completion of the $1.6 million renovation has been delayed until mid-April.

“It’s been pushed back,” squad Director of Operations Kenneth J. Gardner said Tuesday. “We’re just waiting patiently.”

Renovations began in November at the squad-owned building at 1223 Pickering St.

The squad is now at 101 State St. Its lease there with the Ogdensburg Housing Authority is set to expire at the end of the year.

The squad plans to use about 24,000 square feet of the 59,925-square-foot Hacketts building. The rest of the building will be made available for rent and would be available for future squad expansion.

Mr. Gardner said the moving process will begin as soon as the contractors tell him their work is finished.

“It may be done over a weekend,” he said. “And once the radios and computers are shut down, we have to make the move.”

The general contractor for the project is Capital Construction, Watertown.

The mechanical contractor is Empire Northeast, Gouverneur.

The squad last fall closed on a $1.6 million, 30-year loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Office.

That enabled its $733,000 purchase of the building. The terms of the purchase called for the squad to pay $423,121.43 in back and current city taxes as well as $43,475.96 in back and current Ogdensburg City School District taxes on the property.
