BLACK RIVER — After attending the Feb. 14 meeting of the Evans Mills Board of Trustees, Black River Mayor Leland J. Carpenter reported back to his own board that the joint police force shared by the villages would continue.

Mayor Carpenter said the villages have split the costs of police protection since 2008 and now employ three part-time officers.

“We met with the board and I am pleased with the outcome — they are still on board with a joint police force,” the mayor said, noting Black River Trustee Randolph E. Lake had accompanied him.

The board received letters from Staci A. Kline, principal of Black River Elementary School, and Pamela L. Knight, principal of Evans Mills Primary School, in appreciation of services provided by Officer-in-Charge Steven C. Wood. Officer Wood explained to the board that the letters reflected on the increased interaction he has had with the schools since the shooting incident at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

Mayor Carpenter said that upon learning that the West Carthage Police Department had increased its patrols to include the Carthage Central School District buildings along Cole Road, he had broached the subject with Officer Wood and was pleased to learn the officer already had been in contact with the schools in his jurisdiction.

The officer said he has assisted with a lockdown drill in the Indian River Central School District and has shown a presence at both locations. He said these actions are helpful in order to learn the layout of the buildings and to see what security measures are in place.
