AKWESASNE - Although police are following up several early leads on the whereabouts of an Akwesasne man who has been missing for a month, no new information has been generated from the community since police went public with their search earlier this week, Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) Acting Deputy Chief Leroy Swamp said on Friday.

Timothy Benedict-Leaf, who goes by “Timmy,” has not been seen or heard from since Jan. 31, his family said earlier in the week. Investigators have no indication on his whereabouts, according to Mr. Swamp, who added that he has notified U.S. and Canadian authorities - St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, New York State Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Police Information Centre - about the missing man.

Mr.Benedict-Leaf is described as being 5’4” and weighing between 125 and 135 pounds. An AMPS news release says he is of medium complexion, small-framed build, and has long brown hair,.

His grandmother said on Monday that he was last seen wearing jeans, a t-shirt, a hooded sweatshirt and a bandanna and hat. She said that is his usual mode of dress.

She said her grandson had just moved into a new apartment on Cornwall Island. She said he was not a social person and shied away from large groups.

“He goes to Cornwall a lot ... but he’s never stayed away this long,” Lena said on Monday afternoon.

She added he travels from the island to the city by either foot or bike.

Anyone with information on Mr. Benedict-Leaf’ can call AMPS at (613)575-2340. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 613-575-2255, and may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000, according to the release.
