MORRISTOWN An apartment received moderate damage in a fire early Sunday at the Paddle Inn Bar, 3347 County Route 6.
An occupant of an apartment over the bar escaped without injury.
The Morristown Fire Department was alerted at 1:58 a.m. and arrived at 2:03 a.m., saving the building and keeping damage to a minimum. Two residential rooms of the building were destroyed, but the remaining residential areas suffered minor smoke and water damage. The bar area and a storage area in the building suffered minor smoke damage.
Assistance was provided by the Redwood, Lisbon and Ogdensburg fire departments.
The apartment was occupied by Robin Greenley, who was looking after the property for owner John Bussa, who is staying in Florida. The apartment is above the restaurant and bar. Nobody was harmed in the fire.
Morristown Fire Chief Kevin Crosby said Ms. Greenley was awakened by a smoke detector.
This obviously saved her life, he said in a news release. Without the working smoke detectors we most likely would have been looking at a fatal fire.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the St. Lawrence County Cause and Origin team. It was unclear if the building was insured.
