CANTON The New York State Sheriffs Association Institute will begin its annual honorary membership drive in St. Lawrence County in the coming week, Sheriff Kevin M. Wells said.
The drive raises funds for activities including the organizations annual summer camp for economically challenged children, Mr. Wells said. Located on Keuka Lake, the camp hosts more than 800 children from across the state each summer, including 25 to 30 youths from St. Lawrence County.
In these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a summer camp experience or a summer vacation, Mr. Wells said.
The institute also operates a scholarship program that provides one scholarship to each of the states community college criminal justice programs.
All donations are tax deductible. Information will be mailed to area residents, or anyone interested in participating can visit www.sheriffsinstitute.org.
