MALONE - Though it’s only February and the Franklin County Fair is a little over five months away, a calendar of events has already been released.

The fair is scheduled to open on Aug. 2 and run through Aug. 11. While the week will feature many of its traditional events, two musical acts have been booked to take the Grand Stand stage.

Dale Chapin, president of the fair’s board of directors, said Wednesday this year’s events include two concerts – country music star Vince Gill and Little River Band, an Australian group formed in the mid-1970s.

“We’re fortunate to have them booked and signed up early,” Mr. Chapin said. “Vince Gill is probably the most expensive entertainer we’ve ever booked. We’re hoping it’s going to be a big draw.”

He added that the fair board began working with its booking agent – Variety Attractions – since last fall to line up acts for this year’s fair.

Vince Gill just confirmed the concert last week, according to Mr. Chapin.

While he said that for the past few years the board had a variety of concerts, including tribute bands, and musicians typically geared toward pre-teens and teenagers, Mr. Chapin noted that these haven’t been as popular as country music stars.

“People in Malone like their country music,” he said.

According to the fair board. Mr. Gill’s noteworthy accomplishments include being the winner of 18 CMA Awards and selling around 26 million albums.

Mr. Gill is slated to take the Grand Stand stage at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8.

As for Little River Band, the group was popular in the late-1970s and early-1980s, according to the fair board, and “brings new energy and arrangements to the classic hits,” including “Lady,” “Reminiscing,” and “Happy Anniversary.”

This show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale June 3 and anyone can call the fair office at 483-0720 to order them.

As for other fair traditions, the demolition derby is scheduled for Aug. 3 and Aug. 5, while the Adirondack tractor pullers with the tractor and modified truck pull is slated for 2 p.m. Aug. 4. The second half of the tractor pull – street legal truck pull, antique tractor pull and enhanced tractor pull – is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 6.

Mr. Chapin said the board decided to split the tractor pull over a two day span this year instead of having all events in one day.

Other events include the Tony Peterson Helldrivers at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7, the Hometown Day parade and Greater Malone YMCA talent finals scheduled for 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Aug. 8, and, finally, the Painted Pony Rodeo at 4 p.m. Aug. 11.

Mr. Chapin noted that another concert may take place on opening day, Aug. 2, but it has yet to be confirmed.
