LISBON — The Lisbon Town Council is not moving forward with a recommendation by Code Enforcement Officer Christopher J. Sherwin that the town allow residential building on suitable plots less than an acre in size.

Mr. Sherwin made the recommendation at the council’s December meeting.

Planning Board President Steven Wallace said that he opposed the recommendation because it could lead to an increase in housing density.

The town requires residential building be done on plots one acre or larger.

“In talking to members of the Planning Board, the consensus was that everybody wanted to leave (the 1-acre requirement) in,” said Supervisor James W. Armstrong.

Mr. Armstrong said the law is in place so “you couldn’t put one on top of another ... It protects your neighbor.”

But Councilwoman Susan M. Duffy said the one-acre minimum is pointlessly restrictive.

“I have not given up the fight to get the minimum dimension removed,” she said in an email message.

The council is holding a public forum March 13 to discuss removing the Planning Board’s recommendation to approve single-family dwellings.

Ms. Duffy said that she also wants to see that proposal expanded to include all residential permits, including second residences on the same plot.

She said she wants to see that review power placed in the code enforcement officer’s hands.
