River Shiver winter festival starts Saturday

Get ready to shiver.

The annual Ogdensburg River Shiver winter festival starts up Saturday with a seasonal indoor and outdoor events with fun assured for all ages until it wraps up next weekend.

“These are all big events,” said Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sandra M. Porter.

The events are:

Saturday: “Battle at the Bay” Ice Fishing Derby to benefit Wounded Warriors and Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wheathouse Bay; Registration is $30 for adults, $10 for children age 15 and under; hourly prizes for biggest fish, walleye or Northern Pike, first, second and third places. After party and award ceremony at Howie’s, New York Avenue; $500 for biggest pike and $500 for biggest walleye; registration forms available at Howie’s, Chamber office or email howiesicederby@yahoo.co

Saturday: Polar Bear 5 K Walk/Run along Maple City Trail sponsored by area Lions Clubs; day of race registration is $18; registration forms available at the Medicine Place or chamber office; Race day registration begins at 9 a.m. at Dobisky Center; long sleeve tees to all pre-registrants and as available day of race. Race begins at 10 a.m.

Saturday: Polar Bear Plunge, Municipal marina, Dobisky Center); registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and you jump in the order you register; jump begins at 1 p.m.; Costume contest plus the person bringing in the most in pledges wins 10% of the entire purse; hot tub, hot food, hot showers, door prizes and raffle; minimum pledge is $35; to n. To benefit the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and the chamber; registration forms at most banks, the Medicine Place, Phillips Diner, the chamber of commerce office, or online at ogdensburgny.com.

Saturday: Polar Bear Art Activity based on Eric Carley’s illustrations in “Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?”; all ages welcome; 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Ogdensburg Public Library, 312 Washington St.

Saturday: Rock-N-Skate, Richard G. Lockwood Civic Center; free skating for grades kindergarten to sixth grade, 5 to 7 p.m.; free skating for grades 7 to 12 from 7 to 9 p.m.; Rental skates available for $3; contact city parks and recreation department, 393-1980

Thursday, Feb. 21: Cabin Fever Picnic at Knights of Columbus, 721 Hasbrouck St.; sponsored by chamber of commerce; oven-fried chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, rolls and strawberry shortcake; 4:30 to 6:30 p.m,

Saturday, Feb. 23: Battle of Ogdensburgh flag-raising ceremony, Dobisky Center, 1 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 23: Battle of Ogdensburgh re-enactment, downtown Ogdensburg, 2 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 23: The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highland Bagpipe Band at Ogdensburg Public Library, 3 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 23: SNOLF Snow Golf Tournament at Knights of Columbus and Father Martin Field to support the St. Lawrence Valley SPCA; Prizes for best team; putting contest; DJ; door prizes; and food. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Feb 23: Winter ball/English country dance; Ogdensburg Amvets Post No. 19; 7 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 24: Wreath-laying ceremony at Sheriff York’s grave at Ogdensburg Cemetery; 11 a.m.

Sunday, Feb. 24: Bridal Expo, “Rediscovering your Backyard”: 120 Commerce Park Drive; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; sponsored by Ogdensburg Zonta Club
