FORT DRUM — The 10th Mountain Division’s deputy commanding general for support, Brig. Gen. Walter E. Piatt, will become commanding general of the Joint Multinational Training Command, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany.

The assignment was announced Tuesday afternoon by the Department of Defense in an emailed release.

The command, listed as the Army’s largest training command outside of the continental United States, is based in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

Gen. Piatt arrived on post in July, and was promoted to his current rank Nov. 2.

Informed of the new assignment, Carl A. McLaughlin, executive director of the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization, said he was sorry to see Gen. Piatt go.

“He’s been a very good person,” Mr. McLaughlin said.

The post has seen a high turnover rate within the last year at multiple key positions within the 10th Mountain Division’s leadership.

In December, the post welcomed its new commanding general, Maj. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, who replaced Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley.

Gen. Milley, assigned to lead Fort Hood, Texas, had been stationed at Fort Drum for only about a year, less than the usual two-year assignment.

Additionally, Col. (promotable) Mark J. O’Neil in December took over the role of deputy commanding general of operations from Brig. Gen. Richard D. Clarke.

In July, Col. Gary A. Rosenberg was introduced as the post’s new garrison commander, while Col. Thomas D. Macdonald took the role of division chief of staff.

“We’ve been very blessed with having good people come through the system,” Mr. McLaughlin said.
