This past weekend we went as a family to Mount Snow in Dover Vermont for a little ski get-away. Every skiing/boarder family needs to do this at least once during the ski season. Do you get cabin fever during the winter? If so and the winter cold is really getting to you, grab your thermal underwear and do a ski vaca!
Mount Snow was blowing the guns for us, and making quick recovering after last weeks wash out. Cold weather is great for snowmaking. They have these new oscillating snow guns called fan guns all over the resort that look like spinning turbines. They spread the snow back and forth across the terrain on the various trails. At full capacity, one of Mount Snows fan guns can turn 126 gallons of water per minute into snow, compared to a traditional air/water gun which can turn 42 gallons of water per minute into snow. Mount Snows snowmaking system can fill Yankee Stadium with more than 18 of snow in approximately 20 hours.
For our three days of skiing, for the most part I was able to enjoy slushing down the slopes with my husband. We followed the snow guns, which was not hard since they were running everywhere. Powder and bumps were being built up on one of our favorites, the intermediate trail Drifter. We had fun jumping the dips and mounds and looking for a line, a straight path through the moguls. Found some! That was Saturday. Sunday we hit this same trail. It was groomed out and made for some nice carving, we dug into those turns on the corduroy.
Our son, who is five-years old, took lessons in Mount Snows Kids Program. By the end of our stay he was learning how to parallel ski by sliding his uphill ski in on a turn and finishing with the french fry stance (parallel). We were very excited about this. Also, he loved the Tumbleweed area that had consecutive snow whales, like skiing over belly rolls. He skied and flew over them as fast as his little legs could go. It was a riot! Some boarders we saying how can a little guy ski like that. One said, He is too little to be walking. Maybe he cant walk, but, can ski. The other said, Maybe they got snow in their home. No, he is learning and now just really taking off. Thanks to the Little Coronel Program at Willard Mountain and these ski trips we take him on!
Our 18-month old stayed in daycare (they take 3 months old and up). I never like to leave her, but, the Mount Snow daycare gave us a report card each day and she was happy. The one I got Sunday said in summary, Today I went outside and played on the deck. Liked the baby dolls in our classroom. Read some books. Isnt that cute! I would bring her back to the Mount Snow daycare again. I felt quite comfortable with it.
What sticks out as new at Mount Snow is the Bluebird Express. It is the only six passenger bubble chair lift in North America.
This chair lift provides the same protection from the elements as a gondola with the convenience of not having to remove skis or snowboards to ride it. When we skied with our son he kept asking, Can we go on the blue chair? He thought it was very cool.
Mont Snow, an excellent family adventure and an excellent way to avoid cabin fever!
