MASSENA - It was a dark and frigid night.
But that didnt deter the 17 groups that participated in the 2013 edition of the Massena Winter Carnival parade.
The temperature stood at about 10 degrees as the groups took their places on Water Street, ready to march through downtown to West Orvis and then on to the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce office.
Led and rounded out by the Massena Fire Department, the parade participants included the Massena Fire Department, Massena Nursery School, Massena Senior Citizens, Trinity Catholic School, Madison Elementary School, 4-H Club, Jefferson Elementary School, Massena Cub Scout Pack 31 and Seaway Valley Ambulance.
Also taking part were Girl Scout Troops 50403 and 50021, Cubby T. Clown, Frenchies Ford and Frenchies Chevrolet, Liberty Tax Service, Tommy Delosh, Massena High School Music and Drama students advertising their spring production of Back to the 80s, the Massena/Louisville Relay for Life, Nightengale Elementary School and the Massena Rescue Squad.
No matter what group they were with, young and old alike came bundled up for the weather.
This years Winter Carnival theme is Icing on the Snow, and some of the parade participants took it to heart when they designed their floats.
The Massena Nursery School designed their own cake float and, for an added touch, the nursery school students were transformed into snowflakes and candles.
The Friends of Jefferson at Jefferson Elementary School also went down to the wire creating their float that included giant-sized candies, lollipops, ice cream cones and more.
Weve been working on it nights. We were up until about 2 oclock last night, Shannon Day-Laclair said.
Most of the material they used for the float was free, she said, so it was just a matter of making the time to create the masterpiece.
The cold didnt deter parade watchers either. Also bundled up against the cold, many stood along the Main Street route and applauded the participants as they marched or drove by on their way to the chamber office, while watched from the confines of their heated vehicles.
Once the parade was over, the action shifted to the sky, with a fireworks show emanating from Bushnell Field.
Theres still a weekend of activities to go, with many of them taking place at the New York Power Authoritys Visitors Center at Hawkins Point today and Sunday.
